For about five months now, I’ve been going along to the Talking Café at our local church – St Aidan’s Anglican Church. To be honest, when I first heard about it, I had no clue what to expect. But I thought I’d give it a go — and it’s become one of my favourite little traditions.
Talking Café isn’t really about the coffee or tea (though those are always good!). It’s about the people, the atmosphere, and the conversations that happen around the table. Every time, there’s such a mix of folks: some are sharing their stories, others just enjoy listening, and a few simply come along to meet new friends or soak up a bit of community spirit.
I still remember those first few weeks — I felt a bit shy, especially since so many people already seemed to know each other. But that feeling disappeared pretty quickly, because everyone here is so warm and welcoming. It honestly feels like you’re “part of the whānau” from the start.
For me, this place has become something special. I always leave with a lighter heart and a smile. Sometimes I walk away with fresh ideas and inspiration, other times just with that simple, cosy feeling that the day was well spent.
Talking Café is a small habit that makes life in New Zealand feel warmer, friendlier, and just a bit more like home.
