SURF SKATE GROOVE CREATE

In 1915, Duke Kahanamoku an indigenous Hawaiian, introduced modern surfing to Aotearoa. One of those demonstrations occurred at New Brighton Beach in Christchurch.

The annual Duke Festival celebrates the impact that Duke Kahanamoku has had on our Surfing community in Aotearoa through surf & skate competitions, art exhibitions, live music and more. come down to New Brighton and experience this celebration from the 19th – 22nd March for FREE all ages fun!

Last year brought in 190+ competition entries for the surf comp and 50+ for the skate comp – excited to see what 2026 brings!

Our theme this year highlights all of the wonderful sea and foreshore critters who helped our tangata whenua and tangata moana navigate our oceans as a ngā mihi/mahalo to our beautiful ocean which has connected us all.
