Nature’s Rainbow: Discovering New Zealand’s Butterflies

Report

You don’t have to go far to find native wildlife — it could already be in your backyard.

Join us for an evening with butterfly expert Brian Patrick and discover the hidden diversity of butterflies across Aotearoa, and how you can start noticing (and supporting) them locally.

New Zealand’s indigenous flora and fauna are among the most distinct in the world — and our butterflies are no exception, with one of the highest rates of endemism known.

This presentation will cover all of our indigenous butterfly species, including endemic and vagrant species, as well as the full range of introduced species found in New Zealand.

We’ll explore where these species are found across the country, highlighting key distribution patterns and identifying national butterfly hotspots.

The ecology of each species will be discussed, including their larval host plants and the relationships that support their life cycles.

The talk will conclude with a focus on conservation — what’s happening now, and what we can all do to help nurture and protect our unique butterfly fauna.
