Punjabi Folk & Qawwali Night – Safar & Jugni

Report

An evening of lively traditional music from Punjab and the surrounding regions of India and Pakistan, presented by an experienced collective of musicians.

The performance unfolds in two acts: Jugni (Punjabi Folk) and Safar (Qawwali).

Jugni, the ensemble’s Punjabi folk act, showcases a vibrant selection of traditional folk tunes performed on an array of instruments including the sarangi, algoza, dhad, tumbi, rabab, and tabla. This authentic Punjabi folk experience is brought to life in Aotearoa through the expertise of accomplished Punjabi folk musician Kirat Singh.

Safar then journeys into the ecstatic world of Qawwali, performing masterpieces popularised by the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Led by seasoned Qawwali singer Waris Rajput, this high-energy Sufi devotional music is characterised by soaring vocals, rich improvisation, and centuries-old poetry beloved across the Indian subcontinent and beyond.
