Walk the Talk – Burwood Landfill

Report

This Walk the Talk takes us to a site with an incredible transformation story. Once home to vast mountains of construction and demolition material following the earthquakes, the former Burwood Resource Recovery Park has been fully restored and reopened as part of Bottle Lake Forest Park.

Today, with more than 100,000 native plants and new walking and mountain biking tracks woven through the landscape, it’s hard to believe how different this place looked just a few years ago. The area has been completely reshaped into a beautiful recreational space for the community to enjoy.

But the journey to get here hasn’t been simple. On this walk, you’ll hear about the site’s original landfill history, the impact of the earthquakes, and the consequences of large-scale waste disposal from events like the earthquakes through to everyday community waste. We’ll also hear about the ongoing maintenance required and the long‑term plans for this site.

Join us as we explore this unique part of Christchurch East and hear the story behind its recovery, restoration, and new lease on life. As always, stay on afterwards for a cuppa and a free sausage sizzle!

Event details
We’ll walk a 2km loop on mixed surfaces, including gravel paths, roads, and a gentle incline to the top of the grassed landfill mounds for views across the area.
Due to the large site, access via Landfill Avenue will be open for vehicle entry during the event, from 10.30am-12pm. A video and map will be posted with access details.
A portaloo will be available onsite.
Bicycles and dogs on leads are welcome.
Don’t forget to bring your binoculars!
