Christchurch’s community bookshop, We Are Books, is celebrating its first birthday with a special sale running from 29 September to 12 October. Located at 59 Gloucester Street, the shop has become a favourite stop for locals looking for affordable, good-quality secondhand books — and every purchase supports a bigger cause.
All proceeds from the shop go directly to the Canterbury Workers’ Educational Association (CWEA), a registered charity that has provided adult education and community space in Christchurch for over a century. You can find out more about CWEA’s programmes at www.cwea.org.nz.
Since opening its doors on 29 September last year, We Are Books has been more than just a fundraiser. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the shop has helped connect new people to the work of CWEA while providing an accessible source of books for the community.
To mark the milestone, the birthday sale will feature hundreds of $2 book bargains, along with 10% off store-wide for all CWEA members. Shoppers can also look forward to a few celebratory treats in store during the fortnight.
Manager Lottie Vinson says the birthday is a chance to thank everyone who has supported the shop’s first year: “We’re so grateful to our volunteers and customers. Every book purchased not only brings joy to the reader but also helps keep CWEA thriving as a place of learning and connection for Christchurch.”
We Are Books is open 9.30am–3pm Monday to Friday and 11am–3pm on weekends.
