The premiere of WONDER opens at The Isaac Theatre Royal’s, Gloucester Room, 23-25 June.
Christchurch audiences are invited into a darkly funny, visually striking new world of mask and object theatre.
Presented by Hagley Theatre School, The Isaac Theatre Royal and Sahara BreeZe Productions as part of Hagley Theatre School’s Winter Season 2026, Wonder is a new contemporary theatre work blending mask performance, object theatre, magical realism, dark comedy and psychological drama.
When wonder fades, what remains?
Wonder follows one woman whose everyday objects appear alive. Her phone gossips, her bag adores her, and her glasses suspect everyone. These objects have long kept her company, acting as companions, protectors and emotional lifelines. But as therapy begins to pull Wonder toward reality, the magical inner world that has sustained her starts to change.
Funny, strange and moving, Wonder explores loneliness, imagination, healing and letting go. It asks whether becoming “well” can sometimes feel like losing the very thing that once helped us survive.
The production uses a distinctive theatrical language: the outside world is played through mask, while Wonder’s private inner life is brought to life through animated household objects. The result is a playful, surreal and emotionally resonant work about the worlds we build to protect ourselves — and what happens when those worlds begin to disappear.
Performed by Sarah Barham, Blaise Barham, and Isaac Power, and written and directed by Pedro Ilgenfritz in collaboration with Sarah & Blaise, with puppet creation and stage design by Ifat Vayner, lighting design by Ruby Comfort, and music by Nanako Sato, Wonder brings a wealth of international experience to Christchurch bringing audiences an intimate and inventive new theatre experience from Aotearoa New Zealand.
